Japan 1998 Home Shirt football shirt

The short answer

  • The Japan 1998 home shirt was made by asics and worn at Japan's first ever World Cup finals in France.
  • Its flame graphic rising from the hem is one of the most distinctive kit designs of the 1990s.
  • Japanese sizing runs small: an O is roughly a European Medium and an XO roughly a Large.
  • Larger sizes are scarce outside Japan and sell for a premium.

Japan''s 1998 home shirt is the point where Japanese kit design stopped being a niche interest and became something collectors everywhere wanted.

Quick facts

  • Country: Japan
  • Type: Home shirt
  • Worn: 1998 World Cup
  • Manufacturer: asics
  • Sponsor: None (international shirt)
  • Design: Deep blue with a flame graphic rising from the hem
  • Why it is a grail: Japan''s first ever World Cup, and one of the most distinctive graphics of the 1990s

The design

asics printed a flame motif rising up the body from the hem in lighter blue and red tones, against the samurai blue base. Depending on the light it reads as flames, as feathers, or as an abstract wash - which is why people argue about it. The JFA crow crest sits on the chest.

It belongs to the tail end of the 1990s graphic era, but where most shirts of that period used repeated patterns, this one is a single composed image across the whole front.

The tournament

France 98 was Japan''s first World Cup finals. They lost all three group games, to Argentina, Croatia and Jamaica, but the significance was not the results: it was a country arriving at the tournament for the first time, four years before co-hosting it. Hidetoshi Nakata, then at the start of his European career, is the player most associated with the shirt.

Afterlife

Japanese shirts of the 1990s have become one of the strongest areas of the collecting market, helped by Japan''s consistently adventurous kit design. Original asics-era shirts are harder to find in Europe than domestic Japanese sizes suggest, and prices have risen accordingly.

How much is the Japan 1998 Flames shirt worth?

Value is driven by size - larger sizes are much rarer outside Japan - and by the condition of the flame print. Check the price history and live listings for this shirt on Kickio below.

How to spot a fake Japan 1998 shirt

  • Labels. Period asics labelling with Japanese care text and Japanese sizing (O, XO and similar) rather than European S/M/L.
  • Print quality. The flame graphic should be integrated into the fabric print, not a stiff overlay sitting on top.
  • Crest. The JFA crow should be embroidered with dense stitching and correct proportions.
  • Fabric. asics used a distinctive lightweight, slightly textured polyester for this era.

How does the Japan 1998 shirt fit?

Japanese sizing runs noticeably smaller than European sizing. A Japanese O usually wears like a European Medium and an XO like a Large. This catches out more buyers on this shirt than on almost any other - always buy on measurements.

Why it stays on the Grail List

A country''s first World Cup, a graphic nobody else would have attempted, and real scarcity in Western sizes.
