Denmark 1986 Home Shirt football shirt

The short answer

  • The Denmark 1986 home shirt was made by hummel and is famous for its red and white pinstripes reversed down the centre of the shirt.
  • It was worn by the Danish Dynamite side at the 1986 World Cup, including the 6-1 win over Uruguay.
  • hummel has reissued the design several times, so check labelling to tell an original from a reissue.
  • Condition of the pinstripe print and sleeve chevrons has a large effect on value.

Most great shirts are great because of what happened in them. The Denmark 1986 home shirt would be famous even if Denmark had lost every match.

Quick facts

  • Country: Denmark
  • Type: Home shirt
  • Worn: 1986 World Cup era
  • Manufacturer: hummel
  • Sponsor: None (international shirt)
  • Design: Red and white pinstripes, with the halves reversed down the centre line
  • Why it is a grail: The most distinctive international shirt design ever produced, worn by the Danish Dynamite side

The design

hummel took red and white pinstripes and then split the shirt vertically, reversing the colours on each half so one side reads red-on-white and the other white-on-red. The hummel chevrons run down the sleeves. It should not work. It is arguably the best-looking international shirt ever made.

Nothing else on the pitch in Mexico looked remotely like it, and nothing since has matched it for immediate recognition.

The tournament

Denmark arrived at the 1986 World Cup as everyone''s second team. Preben Elkjær, Michael Laudrup, Søren Lerby and Morten Olsen played fast, front-foot football, won all three group games including a 6-1 dismantling of Uruguay, and then lost 5-1 to Spain in the last 16. The nickname Danish Dynamite covers both halves of that story.

Short-lived brilliance is exactly the kind of thing that makes a shirt collectable decades later.

Afterlife

hummel have reissued the pinstripe design several times, and Denmark''s modern kits regularly nod to it. It is one of the few 1980s designs that a casual fan can name on sight, which keeps demand high and reproductions plentiful.

How much is the Denmark 1986 shirt worth?

There is a wide gap between a genuine mid-1980s hummel shirt and the many reissues. Condition of the pinstriping and the chevrons matters. See recorded sale prices and any live listings on Kickio below.

How to spot a fake Denmark 1986 shirt

  • Labels. Original hummel labelling of the period, with correct sizing and care text. Reissues state their production year in modern tagging.
  • Stripe alignment. On originals the reversal down the centre line is cleanly matched at the seams.
  • Chevrons. hummel''s sleeve chevrons should be crisp and correctly spaced; reproductions often get the spacing wrong.
  • Fabric. Period polyester, heavier than modern kit, with a slight sheen.

How does the Denmark 1986 shirt fit?

Boxy 1980s cut, generous in the chest, short in the body. Reissues follow modern sizing and generally fit slimmer. Always check the pit-to-pit measurement.

Why it stays on the Grail List

A design nobody has bettered, attached to a team everyone liked. That is a grail.
