Netherlands 1988 Home Shirt: The Geometric Orange Classic
Euro 88, Marco van Basten's volley, and the adidas shirt that made orange the most collectable colour in football.
By Kickio· 8 September 2026· 6 min read

The short answer
- The Netherlands 1988 home shirt was made by adidas and worn as the Dutch won Euro 88, their only major international trophy.
- Its geometric orange block print was one of the first all-over graphics on an international shirt.
- Marco van Basten's volley in the final against the Soviet Union is the moment most associated with it.
- Genuine 1988 shirts carry period adidas labelling; retro reissues and reproductions are common, so check tags and print quality.
Some shirts are remembered for a club, some for a decade. The Netherlands 1988 home shirt is remembered for a single swing of a boot in Munich - and for a pattern that nobody had seen on a football shirt before.
Quick facts
- Country: Netherlands
- Type: Home shirt
- Worn: Euro 88 and the seasons either side
- Manufacturer: adidas
- Sponsor: None (international shirt)
- Design: Bright orange with a large geometric block pattern in deeper orange across the body
- Why it is a grail: The shirt of the Netherlands'' only major international trophy
The design
adidas took the plain orange of previous Dutch shirts and broke it up with an oversized geometric graphic - angular blocks in a darker orange, printed large enough that the pattern reads clearly from the stands. The three stripes run down the sleeves, the KNVB lion sits on the left chest, and the collar is simple. Understated it is not, and that is the point: in 1988 almost every other national side was still wearing plain colours.
It is one of the earliest and best examples of the all-over graphic that would define shirt design for the next five years. Plenty of shirts copied the idea. Very few did it this well.
The tournament
The Netherlands went to West Germany in 1988 with Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Marco van Basten, lost their opening match, and then won everything that mattered. They beat the hosts in the semi-final in Hamburg, and in the final against the Soviet Union in Munich Van Basten scored the volley - struck from an angle that should not have worked - that is still shown whenever the tournament is mentioned.
That single goal did more for this shirt than any marketing campaign could. Ask a collector to name one Netherlands shirt and this is the one.
Afterlife
The 1988 design has been revisited repeatedly. Nike reworked the geometric motif for later Dutch kits, and official retro versions have been produced. That means the market contains three distinct things: genuine 1988-90 adidas shirts, licensed retro reissues, and unlicensed reproductions sold as originals.
How much is the Netherlands 1988 shirt worth?
Prices depend heavily on whether the shirt is a genuine period adidas piece or a later reissue, and then on size and condition. Long sleeve and larger adult sizes usually command more. Rather than working from asking prices, check the price history and current listings for this shirt on Kickio below - that is real recorded data, not a guess.
How to spot a fake Netherlands 1988 shirt
- Labelling. Originals carry adidas care and size labels of the late 1980s. Modern woven tags, printed neck labels or care symbols in current formats mean a reissue or a fake.
- The pattern. On originals the geometric print sits in the fabric with slightly soft edges. Very crisp, high-contrast printing usually indicates a modern reproduction.
- The badge. The KNVB lion should be embroidered and consistent with the period, not a flat heat-applied patch.
- Fabric. Late-1980s adidas polyester has a distinctive weight and slight sheen. A soft, light, modern feel is a warning sign.
How does the Netherlands 1988 shirt fit?
Late-1980s shirts are cut generously through the body but short in the length compared with modern kit. A period Large usually wears like a modern Medium to Large with a boxier shape. Always buy on the measured pit-to-pit rather than the label.
Why it stays on the Grail List
One trophy, one iconic goal, one design that changed what football shirts looked like. That combination is why the Netherlands 1988 home shirt sits near the top of the Kickio Grail List.
