The short answer

  • The West Germany 1988-90 home shirt was made by adidas and features a black, red and gold flag band across the chest.
  • It was worn as West Germany won the 1990 World Cup in Italy, beating Argentina in the final.
  • It is the last shirt a team called West Germany won a World Cup in, before reunification.
  • adidas has issued official retro versions, so check period labelling and the position of the chest graphic.

Some designs are so strong that they become the country. West Germany''s 1988-90 adidas home shirt is one of them.

Quick facts

  • Country: West Germany
  • Type: Home shirt
  • Worn: Euro 88 through the 1990 World Cup
  • Manufacturer: adidas
  • Sponsor: None (international shirt)
  • Design: White with a black, red and gold flag band running diagonally across the chest
  • Why it is a grail: The shirt West Germany won the 1990 World Cup in, and the last before reunification

The design

adidas broke up the traditional white shirt with an angular band in the national colours sweeping across the chest, with the three stripes on the shoulders and the DFB eagle on the left breast. It is bold without being busy, and it is copied to this day - Germany''s modern kits keep returning to it because nothing has improved on it.

The tournament

Introduced around Euro 88, the shirt reached its peak in Italy in 1990. West Germany beat England on penalties in Turin in the semi-final and Argentina 1-0 in the final in Rome, with Lothar Matthäus captaining a side that also included Jürgen Klinsmann and Rudi Völler. Franz Beckenbauer managed it, having captained the 1974 winners.

Because of reunification, this is the last World Cup won by a team called West Germany. That gives the shirt a status no reissue can manufacture.

Afterlife

adidas has produced official retro versions and repeatedly referenced the flag graphic in later kits, including Germany''s 2024 European Championship period. Genuine 1988-90 shirts remain highly sought, particularly in larger sizes and long sleeve.

How much is the West Germany 1988-90 shirt worth?

The main split is original versus reissue, then size and condition of the chest graphic. Player-issue versions sit in their own market. See the recorded prices and live listings on Kickio below.

How to spot a fake West Germany 1988-90 shirt

  • Labels. Period adidas neck and care labels with late-1980s formats and German care text.
  • The graphic. Original chest bands sit correctly relative to the shoulder seams; reproductions frequently misplace the angle or get the gold tone wrong.
  • DFB eagle. Embroidered with period detail, not a modern flat patch.
  • Fabric. Heavier late-1980s polyester with a light sheen.

How does the West Germany 1988-90 shirt fit?

Roomy in the chest, short in the body, typical for the period. A period Large sits closer to a modern Medium in length. Check measurements before buying.

Why it stays on the Grail List

A World Cup win, a country that no longer exists under that name, and a design that Germany has been reusing for thirty-five years.
