Napoli 1988-89 Home Shirt: Maradona, Ennerre and Mars
Sky blue, a chocolate bar sponsor and the season Napoli won the UEFA Cup.
By Kickio· 8 September 2026· 6 min read
The short answer
- The Napoli 1988-89 home shirt was made by Ennerre (NR) and sponsored by Mars.
- Napoli won the UEFA Cup that season, beating Stuttgart in the final, with Diego Maradona in the side.
- It is one of the most faked shirts in collecting - check the Mars lettering against period photos.
- Maradona name-and-number and match-issue examples sell far above standard retail versions.
If the Bruised Banana is England''s most recognisable shirt, sky blue with a Mars logo is Italy''s.
Quick facts
- Club: Napoli
- Type: Home shirt
- Season: 1988-89
- Manufacturer: Ennerre (NR)
- Sponsor: Mars
- Design: Napoli sky blue with white trim and the Mars wordmark across the chest
- Why it is a grail: Maradona''s Napoli winning the UEFA Cup, in the most Italian shirt of the 1980s
The design
Ennerre - the Neapolitan manufacturer usually written as NR - produced Napoli''s kits through their greatest era. The 1988-89 shirt is simple: the club''s sky blue, clean white detailing, the NR logo, and the Mars sponsor in its familiar lettering across the chest. A confectionery brand on a Serie A shirt sounds like a novelty now; at the time Serie A was the richest league in the world and its sponsors were global names.
The season
Napoli won the UEFA Cup in 1988-89, beating Stuttgart over two legs in the final - the club''s first and, for a long time, only European trophy. Diego Maradona was at the centre of it, with Careca and Bruno Giordano alongside him. Napoli would win Serie A again the following season.
For a club that had won nothing before Maradona arrived, these shirts carry more weight than almost any other in Italy.
Afterlife
Napoli have marked the Maradona era repeatedly, and interest surged again after his death in 2020 and the renaming of the club''s stadium in his honour. Genuine Ennerre-period shirts in wearable condition are scarce and priced accordingly.
How much is the Napoli 1988-89 Mars shirt worth?
This is one of the more valuable shirts on the Grail List, and one of the most faked. Maradona name-and-number examples and match-issue shirts sit well above standard retail versions. See recorded sales and live listings on Kickio below.
How to spot a fake Napoli 1988-89 shirt
- Labels. Period Ennerre/NR labelling with Italian care text. Many fakes use generic or missing labels.
- Sponsor print. The Mars lettering should match period reference photos exactly in font and spacing - a very common tell.
- Crest. Embroidered Napoli crest of the period, not a printed or modern patch.
- Fabric. Late-1980s Italian polyester; be wary of soft, modern-feeling fabric or a shirt that looks too clean for its age.
How does the Napoli 1988-89 shirt fit?
Italian 1980s cut: fitted through the chest and short in the body by modern standards. Sizes are often marked in Italian conventions, so buy on the measured pit-to-pit.
Why it stays on the Grail List
Maradona, a European trophy, and a sponsor logo that everyone on earth recognises. Few shirts combine all three.
